Against All Grains Celebrations

Danielle Walkers third book Against All Grain Celebrations is the gluten, dairy and paleo friendly book alot of people have probably been waiting to arrive.

From birthdays to holiday get togethers this book should cover all of your needs. You no longer have to look longingly at the plates of others looking at the things that you can’t eat, but know that you can eat everything that they are having.

From cupcakes to tarts and even a whole thanksgiving dinner you should have every base covered. I know I will be thankful to be able to offer plenty of variety to family members and friends who eato this way.

If this book is anything like her previous ones we shouldn’t have anything thing to fear. I know I can’t wait to start cooking from it.

Big Bad Breakfast

Normally I wouldn’t pick up a book that was specifically centered around one meal. The exception with this book was recognizing the author. Hiso other book had garnered high praise from friends so I knew that I needed this one as well.

I was definitely not disappointed! It may be a breakfast book, but there are plenty of dishes in the book that could be used at other meals of the day. I have already found plenty of recipes in the book that I can’t wait to try. I think the black pepper biscuits are at the top of the list.

I love the story telling and the photographs that are throughout the book. Especially when it comes to the biscuit recipe and the step by step photos that are included. I don’t think anyone will be upset if they buy this book. With the variety of dishes given from basic to more advanced, I think you will find something for everyone.

All Under Heaven

When I first received the book all I could say is wow. This is a very hefty tome. It comes across as almost encyclopedia like. Is this the end all be all in Chinese cookbooks? It would have to be near the top of all the books that have came out. It is a very impressive book. If you are looking for a book with loads of pictures on every other page, then this isn’t the book for you. There are drawings placed throughout the book. Some are diagrams to show how to roll or cut. I kind of like the idea of no pictures. I think in this case it is going to be best left to the imagination of the cook.

This is definitely not a dumbed down cookbook. I think this title is more suited to a seasoned cook. Don’t get me wrong a beginner could use this book. But I don’t think that is the audience this book is aimed towards. You won’t find alot of Americanized dishes in the book with it staying true to the origins of the dishes.

There are recipes from 35 different regions of China. I’m not going to try and list them all out here. This is a very impressive book and I don’t think anyone would be disappointed purchasing it.

A modern way to cook

Looking back at her first book, I set my expectations based on what I had previously seen. Her new book looks and feels fairly similar. Flipping through both you can tell they came from the same author. Needless to say that isn’t a bad thing. I am equally thrilled with this title as I was her last. She set the bar high with the last book.

Like the last book this one really is a beautiful book. Nice heavy pages and gorgeous photography. The book also has a great flow. This book seems to be based more on quick and easy cooking rather than normal time consuming weekend cooking. Having quick and simple dishes are never seen bad thing.

I’m really looking forward to trying out the recipes in the book. We are currently trying to eat better so I know this book will definitely help.

When I first received this book I was immediately impressed. The storytelling and photography really blew me away. This is a book I could really spend some time enjoying. I flipped through the book to find out who was the author.
Ronni Lundy is a founder of the Southern Foodways Alliance so I immediately knew this was going to be a book I could use. I have alot of respect for the things that the Alliance is doing.
The book focuses on the food of the Appalachians. Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia and the Carolinas.
There is alot of creative home cooking in this book and probably alot of dishes the most people will never have heard of.
The book is divided into eight chapters

Salt of the earth
Appalachian spring
I see myself really getting some use out of this book and would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for new dishes to try.

The Wurst of Lucky Peach

If you are looking for a book on sausage this book is for you. Leading us to new types from all over the world and recipes to go with them. The various types showcased is nice being that it is always great to learn about new foods. I really enjoy the short snippets and storytelling throughout the book. This is the typical Lucky Peach book that I’m accustomed to getting. I would have been disappointed if it was anything less.

The travelling and eating stories make the book interesting. It gives readers a more enjoyable book that I think they will spend more time exploring. There are also the kinds of recipes that I would expect to see. I honestly can’t wait to try the chili recipe in the back. I have tried a few and they just didn’t it the spot. I’m hoping this recipe hits the spot.

If you are looking for a book on just making sausage this might not be the book for you. If you want to learn more about types of sausage then I would definitely recommend it.

The Basque Book

The Basque Book by Alexandra Raij and Eder Montero is a book that shares what they love about this cuisine. Fairly simple recipes that you want to make and eat.
One of the things that I like about the book is the notes at the top of each recipe that give some back story or tells you how it is prepared.
I could see any level of cook using this book. There is something for everyone. I would recommend this book for everyone.

Malibu Farm Cookbook

I really had more hopes for this book. With the price and size of the book I was hoping to possibly be inspired and find some new recipes to try out. When I initially flipped through the book I was unimpressed. Sure it as gorgeous photography and its a nice heavy book. I was expecting more for the recipes and I’m kind of bored with what has been presented.

I will most likely use this as a coffee table book or may give it away to a friend. Overall I really think this looks more like a collection of blog posts.

The Elements of Pizza

The Elements of Pizza is Ken Forkish second book following Flour Water Salt Yeast. He certainly did not disappointed this time around. Just like his first book he gives you fantastic instruction and step by step directions. I can say I got what I was expecting.

It is broken down into seven chapters and theven recipe chapters are divided into more sections. The nice thing about the recipes are there seems to be something for everyone. From a same day dough to those with a 48 to 72 hour fermentation. Four different sauces and over 30 different pizzas.

I really enjoy how detailed the recipes and the step by step pictures and instructions given in the book. If I can’t make good dough after using this book I will be shocked.

Anyone wanting to make good pizza at home I think this will be a great book to guide them along. Thank you to the blogging for books program for providing me with this book in exchange for an honest review.

Home Cooked by Anya Fernald

Home Cooked is a pretty impressive cookbook. It is filled with really fantastic photography and nicely written recipes. There is a really great variety of foods covered in the book. Flipping through it is hard to decide what to make first. This is a nice heavy book printed on heavy paper. The food pictured definitely will make your mouth water.

There are so many things I have marked that I want to try I don’t even know where to start as there are too many to list. I think this would be a great book for any level of cook.
